PenPen Africa was an African writers’ residency project that featured twelve selected writers from across Africa. The project held in both Nigeria and Kenya and ran from July 1, 2019 till June 30, 2020. This project was implemented in partnership with the Writers Guild Kenya. It is co-funded by Culture at Work Africa and the European Union. The schedule for the residency was as follows:
Nigerian Residency (November 2019)
Writers from West and Central Africa.
Kenyan Residency (March 2020)
Writers from East and Southern Africa.
The name PenPen Africa is derived from the word “Pen” and in this context is used in its duality to symbolise first the process of writing and second a place of enclosure used to house a particular specie. The anthology, Twaweza, is a direct product of this residency and contains 24 stories from the writers who took part in the project. This anthology is not for sale and can be distributed for free.
