CALL FOR ACALAN YOUTH VOLUNTEERS 2019

Deadline: 31st November, 2018.

The African Academy of Languages (ACALAN) under the African Union ( AU),  domiciled in Hamdallaye, Bamako-Mali, citing from its very successful and recently concluded Workshop of the Ewe, Soninke and Songhay Vehicular Cross-border Language Commission held in Niamey, Republic of Niger, from 26-29 March, 2018—and from its comprehensive action-plan prepared by the participants, felt the need for having an ( ACALAN Youth Wing) who are expected to work with National Focal Points of ACALAN across West Africa, in educating the youth on the promotion of African languages for a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa. Considering that the promotion of African languages is part of the objectives of the African Union, as expressed principally in the Cultural Charter for Africa (1976), the Language Plan of Action for Africa (1986), the Harare Inter-Governmental Conference (1997) and the Decade for Education in Africa (1997-2006).

The ACALAN YOUTH WING ( AYW) aim to sensitize the public on the importance of reading and writing in African languages for the Africa we want. In order to draw fundamental attentions to a given set of problematic actions, continental values and legal issues surrounding the African youths and their organizations, and drawing their attentions on the promotion of African languages and cultures.  Agreeing with us that not much has changed in the education curricular of Africa, the youth and their organizations have an important role to play in helping the education sector- by encouraging their peers to read and write in African languages, in order to preserve our rich African cultures and heritages, widen their readership, and to promote the habit of reading among youths and marginalised groups. Once more people are seen reading African language books at home or in public places, school children and the youth, especially students would be attracted to reading African books.  In 2019, The ACALAN Youth Wing ( AYW) wish to organize a WORKSHOP in Banjul- The Gambia,  to deal with the role of the youths in the harmonization of Africa's many spoken languages and cultures,  in promoting inclusive development, the future of the book as a cultural product, and the promotion of reading among youths. The THEME of the WORKSHOP is : ‘‘The Harmonization of Africa's Many Spoken Languages: The Role of the Youth and Their Organizations.’’
